Berastagi lies about 66 km from central Medan at more than 1,300 metres above sea level. The air is cool, the fruit market is lively, and Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak are clearly visible on a clear day. No wonder Medan to Berastagi car rental is one of our most common weekend bookings.

Route and travel time

The main route follows Jalan Jamin Ginting through Pancur Batu and then the Sibolangit forest. In normal traffic the drive takes about 2 hours. Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons are usually busy, so allow up to 3 hours.

Places that often slow the journey:

  • Pancur Batu market in the morning
  • Sharp bends and climbs around Penatapan
  • Queues of vehicles during school holidays

The right car

The Berastagi road is dominated by long climbs. For a group of 5–7, the Toyota Innova Reborn Diesel or Mitsubishi Xpander is a safe choice. For two or three people, the Toyota Raize has enough power. Avoid filling a city car to capacity, as the engine will work hard on the climbs.

Tips for a comfortable trip

  • Leave before 7 a.m. The road is quieter and the fog has not yet settled.
  • Have breakfast at Penatapan. Grilled corn and hot sweet tea overlooking the valley is a classic ritual.
  • Bring a jacket. Temperatures in Berastagi can drop below 18°C at night.
  • Use a local driver. A driver who knows the Sibolangit road knows when to overtake and where the safe rest stops are.

Places around Berastagi

In one day you can combine the Berastagi fruit market, Gundaling Hill and the hot springs at the foot of Sibayak. To go further, continue to Kabanjahe or Sipiso-piso Waterfall at Tongging.
